Kohima: Dimapur civil society groups blocked a bid to restart toll collection at two major entry points. The decision came during a joint consultative meeting on November 4.
The Naga Council Dimapur organized the gathering after the Dimapur Municipal Council requested backing for new fees. The municipal body wanted to charge commercial vehicles at the New Field and Dillai inter-state check-posts. This push started after the municipal body made a fervent appeal during a September 21 meeting, asking local tribes and groups to support the proposal.
The plan collapsed quickly. Participants reached a consensus against lobbying the state government to allow urban local bodies to collect these fees again.
Current state regulations remain a major hurdle for the municipal council. In February 2026, the Municipal Affairs Department ordered all urban local bodies to stop collecting vehicle entry fees. This move aligned with an older state directive from May 2022. That policy prohibits any non-statutory fees at check-posts for goods covered under the Goods and Services Tax.
