Viswema Union Conducts Cleanup Drive on Vizol Road in Kohima

Kohima: Nearly 200 residents from the Viswema community gathered in Kohima this past Saturday. They launched a cleanup drive at Vizol Road. This marks the group's first official social work initiative at this specific site.

Volunteers spent the day clearing debris, filling potholes, and fixing up signboards along the stretch of road running from the South Police Station junction to Cathedral Junction. Vithuzo Kikhi, president of the Viswema Union Kohima, led the effort. He confirmed the union plans to hold more of these events whenever maintenance work is needed. Local residents, including members of the New Minister's Hill Panchayat, handled the work without government aid. The group also acknowledged a contribution from Vikehel Kechu.

The road pays homage to Vizol, a former Chief Minister of Nagaland who also served in the Rajya Sabha. Akhale Vizol Khamo, his youngest daughter and General Secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society for Nagaland, attended the event to thank the volunteers. She highlighted her father's humble nature and his role as a co-founder of the United Democratic Party, the predecessor to the Naga People's Front. Khamo noted her father served as Chief Minister twice, from 1974 to 1976 and 1978 to 1980.

Khamo recalled his service during the Second World War and his later work as a founder of the local Indian Red Cross Society. She shared a personal lesson from her father, stating, "The higher you go, the harder you fall." Born in 1914, Vizol remained active in public service until his death on March 3, 2008. The community's work ensures his history remains visible for those who follow.
