Itanagar: A simple request for ice cream turned into a massive digital storm for four-year-old Tinkle Karga Gongo. The Itanagar resident became an overnight sensation after a home video of her asserting her national identity went viral. It happened fast. Her mother, Aiyum Karde, recorded the clip after a stranger questioned the girl's heritage and her use of Hindi.
Tinkle did not back down. She told her mother, "I am Indian. I am Indian. My dad is Indian too, and so am I." Her parents posted the footage, expecting little. Instead, the video blew up across social media platforms. Phone calls started pouring in from organizations and media outlets demanding interviews with the child.
The family says the response surprised them. Aiyum Karde told reporters, "She insisted that I make and post a video about it immediately. So, I made the video. She expressed her emotions so clearly... I posted the video, and it went viral. We had no idea it would go so viral." The parents now spend their days fielding requests and listening to supporters thank their daughter for speaking out.
Tinkle's father believes this spotlight serves a greater purpose. He wants the public to stop making casual, hurtful remarks about people from the Northeast. The family hopes the attention finally forces mainstream India to address the pain caused by such comments. Tinkle remains at the center of a hectic media cycle. A toddler is now a symbol of national pride.
