Villagers risk death on makeshift wire bridge in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: Women in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district face a daily gamble with death. They crawl across a slick steel wire suspended over the roaring Ampani River to reach their farm plots. The makeshift span is their only path to work. It lacks any safety netting or structural support.

Video footage captures the harrowing reality for these farmers. They cling to ropes for balance while navigating the thin wire above the churning water. Residents report the crossing becomes significantly more lethal during the monsoon season. High water levels and violent currents turn the simple commute into a life-threatening ordeal.

The district remains one of the most rugged, isolated regions along the eastern border. Residents lack basic infrastructure like permanent bridges. This forces them to rely on fragile, temporary crossings for daily necessities including healthcare, school access, and local markets. During the rainy season, overflowing rivers frequently trap entire villages by severing vital connections to the outside world.

The visuals highlight the deep frustration in border communities. Citizens are now demanding immediate action from the government. Officials face renewed pressure to build all-weather roads and sturdy bridges. As one resident stated, "The crossing is used regularly, particularly by farmers, and becomes increasingly dangerous during the monsoon when the river swells and currents intensify." These families simply want a safe way home.
