Guwahati: Veteran Assamese actress Purabi Sarma died Tuesday, July 14, in Guwahati. She was 76. Doctors declared her dead at a hospital around 7:30 pm following a sudden cardiac arrest. Family and friends are gathering at her Shantipur residence to pay their final respects.

Sarma defined an era of regional cinema. She broke into the industry with the film Ajoli Nabou. Her early work, Ragini, secured a National Award and cemented her status as a top performer. She maintained a constant presence on screen for decades, eventually moving into television roles like her 2006 turn in the serial Gateway.

She kept working late into her life. Her recent credits include the 2022 film Porobhat. She also bridged the gap to younger fans by appearing in the music video Jua Bosore with singer Zubeen Garg. She regularly appeared at industry events like the Prag Cine Awards and the Filmfare Awards Assamese.

She leaves behind a professional and personal void. She frequently worked alongside acting legend Kulada Kumar Bhattacharyya. Her long partnership with actor, writer, and director Tapan Das earned the pair deep respect across the industry. Colleagues remember her as a pillar of the arts. As one industry observer noted, "Her contribution to regional films and television, along with her lasting impact on generations of artists and audiences, leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to be remembered."
