Guwahati: Veteran Assamese actress Purabi Sarma died on Tuesday, July 14, after suffering a cardiac arrest in Guwahati. She was 76 years old. Medical staff at a local hospital declared her dead at approximately 7:30 pm. Her remains are currently at her Shantipur residence, where friends and colleagues are gathering to pay their final respects.
Sarma debuted in the film Ajoli Nabou, portraying the character Runumoni. She gained widespread recognition for her role in the 1987 film Pratham Ragini, directed by Dhiru Bhuyan. The movie, based on a story by Rama Das, earned a National Award for Best Assamese Feature Film. Critics often pointed to her work in the production as the definitive performance of her career. As one report noted, it was "one of the finest performances of her career."
Her filmography included notable projects like Porobhat, released in 2022. She also found success on television. She appeared in the 2006 Hindi-language series Gateway, directed by Kulada Kumar Bhattacharyya. She later starred in the two-episode serial Kritajnata alongside her husband, Tapan Das. Directed by Ranjit Das and adapted from the work of Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia, the series explored themes of mortality and human connection.
Sarma maintained an active presence in the industry for decades. She participated in the Filmfare Awards Assamese and the Prag Cine Awards. She also reached younger viewers through her appearance with singer Zubeen Garg in the music video Jua Bosore. She shared a long partnership with her husband, actor and director Tapan Das. The pair remained highly respected figures within the Assamese creative community until her death.
