Agartala: Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil died Tuesday, August 4, 2026. He was 90. The former Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal passed away in Kolhapur following age-related health issues. A giant in education is gone.
Born October 22, 1935, Patil spent his life building schools. He received the Padma Shri in 1991 for his work. His D Y Patil Group now operates over 182 educational institutions and seven deemed universities throughout India. These centers serve thousands of students daily.
His public service began as an MLA in Maharashtra. He later served as Governor of Tripura from 2009 to 2013, followed by stints leading Bihar and West Bengal. Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha led the state's mourning on social media. Saha wrote, "Eminent educationist, former Governor of Tripura and Bihar, Padma Shri Dr. D. Y. Patil passed away at the age of 91. A visionary institution builder, philanthropist and respected public figure, he left an enduring legacy through his immense contributions to education, healthcare and public service. May his soul rest in peace."
