Shillong: Dr. D.Y. Patil, the founder of the D.Y. Patil Group and a former Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal, died on Tuesday. Born on October 22, 1935, in Ambap, Kolhapur, Patil spent his life building schools, universities, and hospitals. He started his career in politics with the Congress before shifting his focus to education.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised his climb from an ordinary worker to high constitutional office. "His journey, which began as an ordinary worker, reached important constitutional positions such as mayor, people’s representative, and eventually Governor of various states," Fadnavis said. Patil also established a world-class sports complex in Navi Mumbai and worked extensively in agriculture and social services.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called Patil a symbol of public service. Rahul Gandhi described the news of his passing as extremely heartbreaking. NCP SP President Sharad Pawar noted that Patil’s efforts in health and education will inspire generations to come.
Shiv Sena UBT leader Uddhav Thackeray remembered the long connection between Patil and the Thackeray family. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the state faces an indelible void. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar highlighted Patil’s belief in education as the key to social change. Patil was honored with the Padma Shri for his service.
