Shillong: Meghalaya’s online service portal shows a massive backlog. As of September 21, the Meghalaya State Public Services Delivery Commission dashboard counts 236,438 pending applications. The system tracks 220 notified public services, recording a total of 2,264,742 requests since launch.
Officials have processed most requests. The state delivered 1,827,794 services and rejected 200,510 others. Pending cases now account for 10.4 percent of the total volume. Despite these figures, the commission offers no clear data on how many of these applications have blown past their legally mandated deadlines.
Few citizens fight the delays. Records show only 76 first appeals filed with Appellate Authorities, with 55 closed and 21 still open. Only eight second-level appeals reached the Commission, and all were finished. The Commission’s portal notes: "A citizen may file a first appeal if a notified service is delayed or denied."
The Meghalaya Right to Public Services Act, 2020, promises fast turnarounds. It requires officers to decide on applications within set windows or face penalties. The system covers 220 notified services and 232 sub-services, including common needs like income certificates and registrations. While 224 services operate online, eight remain offline. The government now faces pressure to identify which departments are clogging the system.
