Guwahati: Siddique Ahmed, a veteran politician from the Barak Valley, died at his residence in Baraigram on Sunday. He was 64. A long battle with cancer ended his life.
Born October 1, 1962, Ahmed held the Karimganj South assembly seat for multiple terms. He debuted in 2001 with the Samata Party. He ran as an Independent in 2006 before joining the Congress. He won the Karimganj South seat again in 2011 and 2021, defeating AGP candidate Aziz Ahmed Khan in his final electoral victory.
Ahmed served under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. In 2011, he started as a Minister of State for Co-operation and Border Areas Development. He rose to Cabinet rank in 2015. He managed Industries and Commerce, Power, and Public Enterprises. Congress suspended him in 2022 for cross-voting during Rajya Sabha elections.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mourned the loss on September 13. Sarma and Ahmed shared a history despite opposing political camps. Sarma called him a dear colleague and a compassionate human being who prioritized his constituents.
Regarding their connection, Sarma stated, "We belonged to different political parties, but our bond went beyond politics." Sarma noted they were fellow travelers who faced life's hardships together. The Chief Minister offered his condolences to Ahmed’s wife, Anima, and the rest of the family.
