Imphal: Police stopped a protest march in Imphal Monday. Local clubs, residents, and Meira Paibi groups from 10 Keishampat localities organized the rally. The group demanded the government update the National Register of Citizens using 1951 as the base year. They insisted this work finish before the state conducts a new census.
The march kicked off at Keishamthong Hodam Leirak. Security forces blocked the crowd at Keishampat Junction on the Imphal airport road. Officers kept the protesters from moving toward the city centre. Authorities deployed heavy security to hold the line. The demonstrators want the government to turn its recent rhetoric into hard policy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently noted the Centre is weighing the 1951 base year proposal for Manipur.
Protesters voiced fears regarding local demographic shifts. They demanded firm action against illegal immigration and alleged infiltration. One core demand remains clear: "NRC Updation Before Census." The groups also urged the government to restrict individuals linked to Kuki militant groups to designated zones. They claim these steps are vital to protect Manipur’s indigenous population.
