Imphal: Residents from eight Leikais gathered at the Mayang Langjing Community Hall to demand an updated National Register of Citizens. They want this done before the government conducts the next Census. The Mayang Langjing Semgat Nupi Lup organized the meeting alongside the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation. Locals want to flush out illegal migrants. They see this as a necessary step to safeguard future generations from the fallout of undocumented migration.
Protesters pressed the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation for a firm promise. They want representatives to travel to New Delhi by the end of September. The group aims to push the Centre to recognize 1951 as the base year for the registry. This demand aligns with the organization's previous calls for a formal government announcement on the matter. The crowd also took aim at the lack of communication between the state and central governments.
Attendees demanded that officials release copies of letters supposedly sent to the Centre regarding these concerns. Participants questioned what they described as the government's reluctance to identify alleged illegal immigrants and maintained that the NRC should be updated before the Census. The group committed to continuing their movement until the state acts. They plan to fight any attempt to hold the Census before the NRC issue reaches a resolution.
