SSA Teachers Union Defends Education Secretary Amid Pay Framework Dispute

Shillong: The Meghalaya SSA School Association central body is pushing back against demands to oust Education Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri. Teachers want to keep him. The association president, Aristotle Rymbai, stated in a Saturday video that Mantri is a dedicated official who follows government policy.

Rymbai said the demand for the removal of Vijay Kumar Mantri is unfair. The union claims Mantri has been receptive to teacher grievances. They credit Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui for introducing the Structural Pay Framework and the Contributory Provident Fund.

Teachers have worked on fixed pay without job security for decades. Rymbai admits the pay framework needs work but argues that progress requires dialogue. He maintains that SSA, DFC, ad-hoc, and government teachers perform identical duties and deserve equal pay and benefits.

The union leader criticized VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit for his public stance against Mantri. Meanwhile, activist Eman Ch Marak opposes the new pay framework itself. He argues the policy causes financial hardship and inequality. Marak asked the government to pause and conduct a transparent review to ensure dignity and security for all state employees.
