Guwahati: Assamese cinema is pivoting toward the gritty underbelly of state politics. The upcoming thriller Ghun will stream exclusively on ReelDrama as an original production. It moves away from traditional storytelling to explore dark, contemporary scandals. The film focuses on the land mafia and the politically volatile cash-for-job recruitment scams that have dominated headlines in Guwahati.

Filmmaker Mrinmoy Saikia leads the project. Saikia is a Tezpur University Mass Communication alumnus known for the 2021 crime series Kolongpar and documentary work with the SELCO Foundation. Producers Kuheli Dasgupta and Sumit Dasgupta head the production team, while the project was created by Mrinmoy and Ajit.

The cast features Himangshu Prasad Das as a police officer. Saptarshi appears in a new-age role. Bonny Deori abandons his typical comic persona for a serious turn, and Atul Pasoni takes on a sober character. These casting choices aim to push familiar faces into fresh territory.

Assam filmmakers are increasingly mining local corruption and crime for inspiration. However, critics note a pattern of missed opportunities. Many recent thrillers fail to turn headlines into gripping cinema. They often rely on predictable plots and stiff acting. As the source notes, "Land mafias, recruitment scams and political corruption are subjects audiences already know; the challenge is to make them see these realities differently."

Ghun must now prove it can rise above those clichés. The ReelDrama platform might grant the crew more room to experiment with pacing and dark themes. If the performance and screenplay hold up, the film could define a new standard for Assamese crime thrillers.
