Guwahati: Dweep Sonowal plummeted down a lift shaft from the sixth floor of the Pushpadhar Apartment in Dibrugarh on Friday, August 21. He was fixing the lift when he fell. The State Disaster Response Force pulled him from the wreckage and rushed him to Shankardev Hospital. Doctors say his condition is critical.
Reports suggest Sonowal worked without any safety gear. Angry residents claim the contractor, Munna Singh, failed to provide basic protection for the job. Singh now faces direct accusations of negligence. This accident highlights a dangerous trend in a district seeing a construction boom.
Locals claim site bosses regularly ignore safety protocols to cut costs. One resident noted: "Residents have alleged that workers are often engaged in high-rise construction and repair work without adequate protective equipment, putting their lives at risk." Similar falls happen too often in these apartments. Authorities face mounting pressure to enforce regulations and hold contractors accountable for the hazards on their sites.
