Guwahati: TVS Group handed over Rs 5 crore to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The money bolsters ongoing flood response efforts across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the donation on Friday, August 14. He specifically thanked TVS Motor Company and its Managing Director Sudarshan Venu for the cash infusion.
The company maintains a deep connection to Assam. It built two modern schools in tea gardens located in Dhekiajuli. They also operate healthcare initiatives funded through corporate social responsibility programs. The group opened an artificial intelligence-powered back-office hub in Guwahati last year. This marked the firm's first major financial push into the region.
Sarma noted the company intends to grow its local footprint. He praised the business for its consistent support of the state. "True to its track record of goodwill, the Group has contributed a generous Rs 5 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund towards Assam Flood Response," Sarma wrote on X. The Chief Minister expects further investments from the group in the near future.

Beyond the corporate donation, Chief Minister Sarma used his 80th Independence Day address to lay out a massive infrastructure plan. The state intends to pour 1.5 lakh crore into roads, schools, and urban projects between 2026 and 2031, with 1 lakh crore sourced from the federal government. Sarma touted the state’s shift toward advanced industries, labeling the movement as a transition from chai to chip.
Sarma also announced a hardline stance on social issues. Government employees who abandon a first wife without a legal divorce will face a 20 percent salary garnishment, with the cash going directly to the abandoned spouse. A similar law is in the works for the private sector. The state will also launch a 30-day crackdown on child marriage starting November 1 and set up a new Youth Development and Empowerment Department.
State authorities are looking into a death threat aimed at the Chief Minister. A Facebook user, identified as Abdul Mutaleb, allegedly posted the threat during the Independence Day livestream, including a reward for the act and anti-India slogans. Security agencies are checking if the threat is credible or just noise.
Looking toward 2028, the government plans a massive celebration to mark 800 years since the arrival of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom. The event aims to put the legacy of Ahom integration and cultural history on a global stage.

Beyond the donation, Sarma used his 80th Independence Day speech to bank on an ambitious economic pivot. The state plans to pump 1.5 lakh crore into infrastructure over the next five years. While 1 lakh crore will come from federal coffers, the state is coughing up 50,000 crore from its own reserves to push roads, schools, and urban projects. Sarma claims the state economy has nearly tripled in less than a decade and pointed to the new semiconductor facility as evidence of a shift from chai to chip.
The Chief Minister also rolled out fresh social directives. He plans to establish a Youth Development and Empowerment Department to sharpen skills and expand job access. He confirmed that the 20 percent salary garnishment for government employees who abandon a first wife will also be pursued through legislation for the private sector to ensure the same protections. Additionally, Sarma intends to clear pending government files in mission mode and create eight new co-districts.
Sarma set the stage for the upcoming Census, urging settlers who have assimilated into local culture to list Assamese as their mother tongue, though he made exceptions for tribal communities and those in the Barak Valley. He also lauded the recent international success of state athletes, citing boxer Lovlina Borgohain and badminton player Asmita Chaliha as proof that local talent can dominate on the global stage when given the right backing.

Sarma is opening the state coffers to hit a goal of a Viksit Assam by 2047. He earmarked 50,000 crore from state reserves to bolster the massive 1.5 lakh crore infrastructure plan. Beyond the big-ticket construction, he is moving to modernize the state police by upgrading emergency 112 vehicle services to run around the clock and building a satellite city near the Guwahati airport.
New administrative hurdles are on the way. Sarma wants to clear pending government files in mission mode and will carve out eight new co-districts. He also called on residents who have moved to Assam from other parts of the country to list Assamese as their mother tongue during the upcoming Census, though he granted carve-outs for the Barak Valley and tribal populations.
The government is doubling down on sport to build local pride. Sarma credited the international success of athletes like Lovlina Borgohain and Asmita Chaliha as proof that home-grown talent can dominate global stages with proper backing. The Chief Minister also took a firm line on the death threat incident, stating authorities are currently dissecting the social media activity and digital trail left by the user to determine if the threat is a genuine danger or just online bluster.
