Guwahati: Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankhar died Monday after being found unconscious inside his office at state police headquarters. Staff rushed the 1994-batch IPS officer to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala. He arrived around noon. Doctors declared him dead at 12:48 pm.
Dr. Pradip Bhoumik, head of the hospital medicine department, noted that the official cause of death awaits a post-mortem examination. He said, "The cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination." Dhankhar leaves behind a wife and daughter.
Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha and Health Secretary Kiran Gitte arrived at the hospital immediately following the incident. Rumors of suicide surfaced on social media, prompting immediate political backlash. Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury demanded a full judicial probe. Chaudhury stated, "If a senior IPS officer commits suicide, it shows the law and order situation in the state. We demand a judicial inquiry to ascertain the actual cause of death and the circumstances that led to it."
Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy urged the public to avoid speculation until the formal report is released. Debroy confirmed that a magisterial-level inquiry will take place. He noted, "He was found dead inside his office on Monday. A magisterial-level inquiry will be conducted into the incident. The truth will come out shortly." Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death while the investigation remains ongoing.
