Guwahati: More than 50 students at Assam Engineering College in Guwahati fell ill after unknowingly using water from a hostel tank containing a dead monkey. The grim discovery occurred at Hostel No. 7. Students noticed a foul smell coming from their taps.

An inspection revealed the carcass had been rotting in the storage tank for nearly a week. Students used the tainted water for daily hygiene and mess cooks prepared food with it. Residents suspect the contamination began around Durga Puja. The failure to detect the animal corpse for days points to a massive lapse in facility maintenance.

Authorities rushed the victims to Ayurvedic College Hospital in Jalukbari. While some students recovered, others remain under medical care. Many require intravenous fluids and are confined to their rooms. The student body is furious. They have long complained about water shortages and poor management at the hostel.

The incident has turned a spotlight on neglected sanitation standards at the campus. One student representative noted the danger, stating, "The incident has raised concerns over hostel water management, sanitation and the monitoring of drinking water facilities at the engineering college."
