Agartala: Authorities pulled four officers off duty at the Bishalgarh police station following allegations of theft. The suspended personnel include officer-in-charge Bijoy Das, second OC Supratim Dey, sub-inspector Banijay Reang, and constable Bahar Mia. The move follows claims that 2.7 kg of gold ornaments disappeared from a vehicle while it sat in police custody. The department took this step to ensure an impartial investigation.
The trouble started back in February. A family from the Sonamura-Melaghar area drove toward Agartala to sell gold for a sick relative. Officers stopped the car near Bishalgarh College. They searched the vehicle and reportedly found over three kg of gold inside. Police redirected the car to a tea garden before finally moving it to the station. Officers held the family there for hours. When the group finally left, the gold was gone.
The family accused the police of stealing the valuables after local complaints failed to spark action. The Tripura High Court stepped in, ordering the department to file an FIR and bring in the Crime Branch. The court directed that "a competent officer of the Crime Branch be appointed to investigate the matter." Police officials filed case number 73/2026 to track the probe. Detectives remain on the case.
