Agartala: Tripura officials are tightening security for the upcoming village committee elections. State Election Commissioner PK Chakraborty and Director General of Police in-charge GS Rao led a video conference on September 14 to assess law and order. The meeting included district magistrates, collectors, superintendents of police, and Inspector General of Police Ipper Manchak. They demand a peaceful vote.
Elections for 587 village committees across 2,634 constituencies begin on September 28. Officials are finalizing deployments now. The counting of votes follows on October 5.
The nomination process started September 1 and closed September 8. Scrutiny finished September 9. SEC Secretary Anurag Sen confirmed 10,889 nomination papers remain valid from an initial pool of 10,958 submissions. Currently, 9,820 candidates remain in the race after 1,069 individuals withdrew their papers.
Valid candidates span several political groups. The Tipra Motha Party leads with 4,361 candidates. The CPI(M) follows with 2,456, the BJP with 1,971, the IPFT with 483, the Congress with 465, and the CPI with four. An additional 1,149 candidates fall into the others category. Withdrawals hit every party, including 302 from the CPI(M) and 105 from the BJP. The commission is focused on logistics. "The State Election Commission directed the concerned authorities to ensure adequate security deployment, coordination and necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of polling."
