Agartala: Tripura CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury is demanding stepped-up security for the upcoming vote count for Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. Chowdhury fired off a letter to the State Election Commission citing a pattern of interference. He alleged that ruling-party-backed miscreants engaged in what he termed as "undemocratic violent aggression" throughout the nomination and polling phases.

The violence allegedly blocked opposition candidates from filing papers in several seats. Now, Chowdhury wants the Commission to lock down the process to prevent further trouble during the final stage of the election. He submitted seven specific demands to the SEC to ensure the counting remains transparent and free of intimidation.

The list includes the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces inside all counting halls. He also insisted that counting agents must be registered voters in the TTAADC area, matching the rules from previous general elections. Chowdhury wants live, uninterrupted webcasting from every hall. He ordered that unauthorized individuals, regardless of political stripes, stay out of the counting centers. Counting must run straight through to the finish without any breaks.

He also requested police protection for opposition agents traveling to and from the centers. Finally, he called for designated, police-secured areas where party supporters can gather safely in each block.

The State Election Commission has set the vote count for October 5. SEC Secretary Anurag Sen confirmed that counting will take place across 44 blocks, utilizing 45 centers. Most locations feature a single hall, though the Manu block will operate two to handle its higher volume of seats. Returning officers will announce results round by round as they finish.

As the commission manages this final phase of the tribal council elections, officials are shifting focus to upcoming urban local body polls. They have identified 783 polling stations across 21 civic bodies and published a draft electoral roll on October 1. The data shows 631,388 registered voters, including 308,983 men, 322,360 women, and 45 third-gender individuals. The commission set an October 8 deadline for public claims or objections, with the final voter list slated for release on October 15, 2026.
