Agartala: Ranjan Debnath, the headmaster of PM SHRI Sabroom Girls Higher Secondary School in southern Tripura, secured the 2026 National Teachers Award. He stands among 48 educators chosen from across the country for their work in school education. His selection brings national attention to teachers working outside major urban hubs.

The Ministry of Education manages the award to celebrate those who shape student lives. Debnath previously studied at Umakanta Academy and MBB College in Agartala. Officials ran a rigorous three-stage selection process, moving from district to state to national levels. This year, the cohort includes 26 men and 22 women from 27 states, seven union territories, and six central government organizations.

Between June 15 and July 20, teachers submitted self-nominations online. President Droupadi Murmu will hand out the honors at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 5. The ceremony takes place on Teachers Day. "The event will also feature short documentaries showcasing the work of each awardee."

Viewers can catch the live broadcast on Doordarshan and SWAYAM PRABHA channels. The Ministry will also stream the event on social media platforms. Debnath’s win marks a shift in how the nation views grassroots commitment.
