Agartala: Tripura officials plan to open the Dr. BR Ambedkar Memorial Hostel in Agartala within two months. The facility aims to house 100 male college students from across the state. SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das confirmed the timeline on October 1. Current occupancy sits at just 16 students.
The government wants to help students from low-income families find affordable housing. Renting rooms in the capital drains bank accounts. "Many students from economically weaker families cannot afford to rent rooms in Agartala and bear the expenses of food and other necessities. We have decided to open this hostel for SC male college students so that they can pursue their studies without facing such financial difficulties," Das said.
Previous efforts to fill beds via newspaper ads and appeals to elected leaders failed. Workers will now begin renovations. Repairs will cover doors and windows while adding necessary furniture. The Director and District Welfare Officer must wrap up the project quickly.
Staffing remains a hurdle. The SC Welfare Department does not manage its own hiring. The School Education Department handles those appointments. Employees often refuse to work outside their home districts. This creates friction for the department. Officials hope the upgraded site will finally meet student needs.
