Agartala: Agartala police deployed water cannons and riot vehicles to crush a protest by hundreds of TET-qualified job seekers outside Shiksha Bhavan. The demonstrators, who cleared 2024 TET-1 and TET-2 exams, demanded the release of merit lists and immediate hiring for 1,856 government teacher posts. Tensions flared when police moved to break up the road blockade. Protesters alleged that officers used excessive force during the crackdown.
Multiple demonstrators accused West Tripura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sanjit Sen of physical assault. One detained candidate, speaking from inside a police van, described the scene. “Women were thrown into the drains by water cannons. Two female teachers fell under a bike,” he said. The candidates claimed police threatened them with FIRs to destroy their careers.
Sub-divisional Police Officer Panna Lal Sen justified the operation, citing intelligence reports of a planned attack on a vital installation. He claimed an Executive Magistrate ordered the use of water cannons to pacify the crowd after they ignored lawful commands. Protesters were hauled away to AD Nagar police lines. The candidates argue they have been waiting years for recruitment after completing document verification for 1,856 GT and UT positions.
Teachers Recruitment Board Tripura Chairman Pratyush Ranjan Deb defended the delay. He stated that a High Court order regarding a disputed answer key requires a re-evaluation of results for 2,929 candidates. Deb noted that there is no provision for extra marks in OMR exams. Aspirants claimed they repeatedly sought meetings with the Chief Minister and Finance Minister without success. They are now threatening further agitation if the government refuses to resolve the recruitment stalemate.
