Agartala: The Tripura Cabinet cleared a plan to give out free festival rations to nearly 9.9 lakh card holders. Cabinet spokesperson Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed the move on Wednesday, October 7, following a Tuesday meeting. Each household gets 500 grams of suji, 1 kg of maida, and 1 kg of sugar at no cost during October and November. The state will shell out Rs 9.35 crore to cover the supplies. Officials expect to move 243 MT of suji, 1,984 MT of maida, and 929 MT of sugar through fair price shops.

Jobs are opening up fast. The government approved 700 new Secondary Graduate Teacher spots for Classes IX and X on fixed pay. Education officials also got the green light to hire 361 teachers, split between 75 Graduate Teachers and 286 Under Graduate Teachers. The Agartala Municipal Corporation will add 213 roles, and the Science and Technology Department will fill eight vacant Lower Division Clerk slots. State leaders also formed the Tripura Staff Selection Commission to manage recruitment for Group B, C, and D government posts.

Welfare perks saw a boost, too. The SC Welfare Department doubled sitting allowances for sub-committee members from Rs 100 to Rs 200. Minority Welfare boarding students will now receive Rs 100 per day instead of Rs 65. Chowdhury noted the policy, stating, "The free festival allocation has been provided every year to all ration card holders."

Chief Minister Manik Saha chaired the session that greenlit these moves. Officials expect to roll out the festival food drop between Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja. The spending for the rations could climb as high as Rs 9.85 crore based on revised estimates, though the initial projection remains at Rs 9.35 crore.

The newly minted Tripura Staff Selection Commission will operate as an autonomous body, mirroring the structure and operational procedures of the Tripura Public Service Commission. The 213 roles headed to the Agartala Municipal Corporation cover a mix of technical, administrative, and service-level duties.
