Guwahati: The Tinsukia Municipal Board is broadcasting footage of people caught urinating in public on giant LED screens. Officials turned to the shaming tactic after an earlier effort involving large mirrors at hotspots failed to stop the practice. The videos now play outside the municipal office to deter offenders and force behavioral change.
Executive Officer Nayan Jyoti Nath confirmed the move follows constant complaints about the mess at busy spots. Violators are often caught on AT Road, Lal Bunglow Road, and near schools. Municipal teams now record individuals to use as evidence for fines and to fuel the public awareness campaign.
Nath defended the aggressive strategy. "The objective of the campaign extends beyond imposing penalties," he stated. He added that the town already provides enough toilets and residents should use them. Repeat offenders face formal fines under municipal regulations.
Locals back the strict enforcement. They say the town needs better habits, especially since it serves as a major commercial hub for many visitors. Some residents warn that the graphic videos make women and children uncomfortable, however. While supporters view the shame as a solid deterrent, critics demand that the board install more free and pay-and-use toilets instead of just playing videos.
