Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma identified a dangerous new drug corridor on Wednesday, August 26. The route runs from Myanmar through the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh into Tinsukia, Assam. This development puts Upper Assam at significant risk. Traffickers recently diverted from traditional routes in Mizoram and Manipur to avoid police pressure.
Sarma confirmed that state authorities are ramping up their anti-drug crackdown. Police recently seized a massive consignment in Guwahati valued at nearly 80 crore rupees. Officials suspect the shipment was destined for Punjab. During the press briefing, the Chief Minister emphasized the scope of the problem. "We are continuously seizing drugs. But this is a very big milestone," he stated.
Interrogations of arrested peddlers provided the intelligence on the new movement. The government now plans to tighten surveillance along the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Law enforcement aims to stop this corridor before it becomes a permanent fixture of the regional narcotics trade.
