Guwahati: Four men allegedly gang-raped an 18 to 19-year-old woman in Namphai Lishang village, Assam, on August 14. The attack occurred within the jurisdiction of the Jagun Police Outpost. Police caught one suspect, Akash Tamang of Karpumpuli village, hiding in Chowkham, Arunachal Pradesh. Officer-in-charge Tridip Lahon led the team that made the arrest with help from local Arunachal police. The court granted four days of custody for further questioning.
Three attackers remain on the run. Police are currently hunting them. Investigators are also looking into a woman named Anita Anti. The victim claims Anti threatened her hours after the assault and tried to pay her off for her silence. Anti has since fled and currently remains at large.
Authorities are examining an unverified report linking one of the four accused men to a communal nationalist student organisation. Tridip Lahon stated, "The case has also brought the alleged role of a woman, identified as Anita Anti, under police scrutiny." Officials maintain that the allegations against all named parties remain subject to ongoing investigation and future judicial proceedings.
