Kohima: NSCN (IM) Deputy Ato Kilonser VS Atem is pushing for a Union Ministerial-level official to head the Indo-Naga peace talks. He rejected the current reliance on intelligence bureaucrats during the Naga Independence Day event at Hebron Camp on August 14. Atem argued that the nature of the dispute is strictly political and requires a counterpart with clear political authority.
Talks were originally intended to happen at the Prime Minister level. Scheduling conflicts made that impossible. Atem noted the group previously accepted PM-appointed representatives but now wants a change. He said, "We maintain that this is a political issue, and therefore, a political person should lead and represent the Government of India."
Atem downplayed the role of the Nagaland state government in the process. He described their involvement as mere facilitation. If New Delhi fails to show genuine commitment to core principles, the group is prepared to move future negotiations to a third country. He claimed the government struggles to keep its promises despite voicing a desire for a fast settlement.
The leader also addressed criticism regarding the secrecy of the Framework Agreement. He dismissed concerns by stating the single-page document is already public. Specific competencies remain in the proposal stage and will stay under wraps until both sides finalize the details.
