Kohima: Nagaland authorities opened a formal investigation into a forest official following allegations of extortion. The State Crime Police Station registered an FIR after Vezhoto Hesuh claimed staff from the Dimapur Wildlife Division demanded 1 lakh rupees to release him from custody.
Trouble started in September. The Wildlife Crime Control Unit picked up Hesuh after he posted photos and videos of animals to his Facebook page. Police claim the officials made the demand without issuing a written notice, receipt, or any official paperwork.
Investigators acted fast. Dimapur police conducted a preliminary inquiry and collected sworn statements from involved parties. They also seized an audio recording that supposedly captures the illicit demand. PRO for the PHQ, Nagaland, stated: "Further investigation, including a forensic examination of the audio recording, has been sought to establish the facts."
Officers booked the case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The probe continues as labs analyze the evidence. Officials insist the charges remain under active investigation.
