Kohima: Nagaland officials are tightening the screws on local commerce. The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection ordered all traders, wholesalers, and manufacturers to verify their weighing and measuring gear immediately. This directive covers all retail, manufacturing, and packing operations across the state. Traders must ensure every instrument meets the Legal Metrology Act of 2009 and the 2011 general and packaged commodities rules.
You cannot use defective or unverified equipment for any transaction. Officials demand that every sale involving weight, measure, or count use standard units. Pre-packaged items must feature mandatory labels, including net quantity, the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, and the MRP. The department issued a clear warning regarding these standards, stating: "Any violation detected during inspection shall be dealt with strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and applicable Acts and Rules, including applicable penalties and proceedings."
Traders must keep their licenses, verification certificates, and records on hand at all times. Inspections are coming. Officers will patrol the state to catch short deliveries and incorrect measurements. Business owners should cooperate with these enforcement teams or face legal action.
