Kohima: Legal experts and state officials converged on Kohima College on August 18 to warn students about trade exploitation. The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection held the event alongside the college economics and commerce departments. They tackled the theme of Safe Products, Confident Consumer.
Sunjib Rana, a lawyer with the Kohima District Legal Services Authority, told the room that the Consumer Protection Act goes beyond basic retail. It touches every part of the economy. He urged students to slow down before spending their money. "Once we are informed, we are aware, we become a confident consumer. And once you become a confident consumer, you will get the best product which is safe for you." Consumers have the legal power to challenge bad services or unfair trade traps in court.
Shiekhozo, an assistant controller at the LMCP, explained that his department keeps traders honest by enforcing strict rules on measurements and practices. He linked this work to the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision for a developed nation. The department aims to shift from simple regulation to being a tech-driven force for fair trade. He told the students that informed buyers stop merchants from cheating them.
Dr. Vitsosie Vupru, principal of Kohima College, reminded the students that they hold the power in the marketplace. However, that power fades if the buyer stays silent. Assistant Professor Dr. Meyisangla Longkumer, who chaired the meeting, said that students must stay vigilant to protect the broader economic system. The program wrapped up with a performance by Kongkhao and a final thank you from LMCP inspector Er Silo Jemu.
