Kohima: Nagaland finally has natural gas. Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited pushed gas into the new Dergaon-Dimapur pipeline this week. This project links the state to the national network for the first time. The pipeline went live on Tuesday. It marks a shift for the Northeast gas economy.
The move taps into gas from the ONGC Jorhat Asset. It allows for the use of 1,10,000 standard cubic metres of gas every day. This gas was previously stranded. Now, it can hit the market to power industrial and commercial users. The company expects the project to replace imported liquefied natural gas. It should generate about 300 crore rupees in economic value each year.
IGGL is a joint venture between Indian Oil, ONGC, GAIL, Oil India, and Numaligarh Refinery. An official statement noted, "The development represents an important step towards expanding gas infrastructure in the Northeast and strengthening the region's integration with India's growing gas-based economy." This infrastructure project aims to bolster national energy security while cutting down on foreign reliance.
