Kohima: Nagaland officially joined the North East Gas Grid and the National Gas Grid on August 17. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed the commissioning of the Dergaon-Dimapur pipeline. The project marks a move toward a gas-based economy. It connects the region to a wider network.
The pipeline sends natural gas from ONGC fields in Jorhat, Assam, directly into Nagaland. Puri called it a "landmark step" for the region. Officials expect the project to unlock hundreds of crores of value every year. It moves the state toward the government goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The connection handles 1 lakh Standard Cubic Metres of gas each day. This volume helps lower gas flaring and cuts down on expensive LNG imports. It strengthens energy security for local households, transport, industry, and power sectors. The work also feeds into the One Nation, One Gas Grid initiative.
Simultaneously, gas evacuation facilities went live at Khoraghat GGS-1 in the Golaghat district of Assam. This allows surplus gas from the Upper Assam Shelf to enter the network built by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited. Meanwhile, ONGC works on new hook-up facilities at Jantapathar and Kasomarigaon. These sites will soon tie additional Jorhat production fields into the grid.
