Assam and Union Government Push Major Energy Infrastructure Projects

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi on July 27. They sat down at Kartavya Bhawan to thrash out plans for strengthening the state energy sector. The two leaders aimed to cement Assam as a primary engine for national energy security.

Big projects topped the agenda. They reviewed the expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery, which targets a production hike from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA. The duo also checked on progress for the Phase-I of the North East Gas Grid and the upgraded Numaligarh to Siliguri pipeline. These works serve one goal: better fuel supplies and gas connectivity for the entire Northeast.

Puri praised the meeting after it wrapped up. Writing on the platform X, he noted, "Assam and the wider Northeast would continue to play a significant role in advancing India's energy goals and the vision of Viksit Bharat." Officials confirmed the Centre intends to exploit the state's hydrocarbon resources and strategic location to drive growth. The push is on to make the region a heavy hitter in the national energy supply chain.
