Guwahati: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation successfully sealed a gas bubbling site at Napam Baruwati in Assam. The leak occurred within the company's Geleki field in the Sivasagar district. Officials confirmed the site is now stable and fully under control.
The low-intensity bubbling persisted for nearly a week. It remained confined to a single localized spot. ONGC deployed a multidisciplinary team to manage the hazard and implement safety measures immediately. The crew barricaded the area and kept it under continuous watch.
Workers used hand-held detectors to track methane levels. Readings showed only very low concentrations of the gas. Technical teams verified pipeline drawings and swept the ground with underground locating equipment to find the source. "These investigations have ruled out the presence of any buried pipeline beneath or in the vicinity of the location," the company stated on July 14.
Crews excavated the site on Monday to stop the flow. They applied a chemical barite treatment to the pit. A cement-concrete mixture sealed the opening permanently. Bubbling ceased following the repair. ONGC will keep monitoring the area as a precaution to ensure safety protocols remain intact.
