Guwahati: The Assam government launched a magisterial inquiry following the death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manas Jyoti Chetia. Someone found Chetia critically injured on the side of a road in the Birubor area on August 23. Medics rushed him to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, but he died from his wounds. A post-mortem revealed multiple injuries, specifically severe trauma to the back of his head.
Bir Lachit Sena members claim he was attacked. The group identified 10 suspects and blamed Bangladeshi Muslims for the incident, though officials have not verified these claims. Tension is rising in Sivasagar as the investigation gets underway.
Shrinkhal Chaliha, a leader with the Bir Lachit Sena, accused local police of shielding the suspects named in the FIR. "Instead of acting against them, the police were providing them protection," Chaliha claimed. He warned of major protests if the administration fails to arrest the individuals mentioned by his organization. Chaliha also pressed the government to investigate suspicious people allegedly entering the Bihubar area during recent floods.
