Guwahati: Assam Police launched a Special Investigation Team to probe the death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manasjyoti Chetia. The team formed on August 26, 2026, focuses on Bihubar Police Station Case No. 10/2026. Investigators are looking into Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Deputy Superintendent Lila Borah leads the group.
The team includes Inspector Mridul Hazarika, SI Chiraj Saikia, and WSI Sumi Barman. They must remain on the case until it ends. Police have detained five people: Abidur Rahman, Selima Begum, Subera Begum, Selimur Rahman, and Anwara Begum. The Bir Lachit Sena FIR named 10 suspects total. These include Habibur Rahman, Sujabul Rahman, Subhashin Islam, Murjida Begum, and Mojminka Begum.
Chetia died August 25. He was receiving treatment for injuries suffered August 23. That night, responders found his body around 10:30 pm. Chetia had been helping flood victims since July 19. He was handing out supplies when the incident occurred. Central leader Shrinkhal Chaliha stated, "Chetia had intervened in a dispute involving a family whose house had been washed away during the floods."
The victim had allegedly stepped into a land fight in Bihubar on August 22. Supporters claim he was attacked while trying to settle the row. The family involved had been sheltering at a local petrol station. Senior officials are now moving to assist the probe. Inspector General KJ Saikia is heading to Bihubar. DIG Dr. Robin Kumar and a forensic unit are also traveling to Sivasagar. The organization labels Chetia a martyr.

Bir Lachit Sena chief secretary Anupam Sandikoi filed the formal complaint against the 10 suspects. Following the activist's death, supporters moved his body toward the group's office in Sivasagar, leading to reported friction between the crowd and police personnel during the transit.
The organization has organized final rites for Chetia at Rohdoi Pukhuri in Rupahi Pathar, located in the Nazira area of Sivasagar district.
