Kohima: Naga Hospital Authority Kohima is moving to offer organ transplants. The hospital has officially started the registration and licensing process. Dr. Mereninla Senlem, Principal Director of the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, announced the development during Indian Organ Donation Day on August 3. The event was held at the NHAK Auditorium in partnership with the MOHAN Foundation and the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, Nagaland.
Nagaland currently lacks local transplant facilities. Patients must travel outside the state for these procedures. Dr. Vikieo Khroumo, a nephrologist at NHAK, noted that 750 patients in Nagaland rely on regular hemodialysis. Global data shows 670 million people suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease, with 100 million cases in India. While 20,000 transplants occurred nationwide in 2025, roughly 90,000 patients currently await an organ donor.
Dr. Senlem emphasized the state is building necessary infrastructure and staff capacity. The government is working with civil society and faith based groups to increase awareness. She noted, "we are beginning at an important stage in our journey towards strengthening organ donation and transplantation services."
The program, themed "Stories of Hope, Gifts of Life: Promoting Organ Donation in Nagaland," featured testimonies from living donors and transplant recipients. It also included a testimonial video from a Manipur donor family. The hospital now focuses on training professionals and engaging stakeholders to support the transition.
