Agartala: Amjadnagar, a Muslim-majority village near the India-Bangladesh border in the Belonia subdivision of Tripura, is hosting its first Rath Yatra. This inaugural festival marks a shift for the settlement, as local residents from both the Hindu and Muslim communities work side-by-side to organize the event.
Hindus initiated the planning, but they invited their Muslim neighbors into the fold immediately. The organizing committee now includes members from both faiths. They view the chariot procession as a way to turn shared civic spaces into shared cultural territory. One committee member noted the significance of this cross-faith cooperation.
"It is for the first time that a Rath Yatra is being organised here in Amjadnagar," he said. "Even though it is primarily a festival of the Hindu community, they invited us to be a part of the celebrations. Responding to that invitation, we have come together to extend our full support to our Hindu brothers."
The festival honors Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, alongside his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Participants pull wooden chariots in a traditional procession between temples. Organizers have invited people from all across Tripura to attend. They hope the event sends a clear message of brotherhood and peace.
