Aizawl: A Serchhip district court handed down a 20-year prison sentence to RT Lalhlimpuia on August 2. The resident of Thenzawl must also pay a Rs 2 lakh fine. Failure to pay that money adds another year to his time behind bars.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Julie Lalrinzami delivered the verdict on July 17. She found the man guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The crime occurred in 2023. Officials confirm that "the offence was committed in 2023, following which a case was registered against the accused under the POCSO Act."

Lalhlimpuia is not free yet. He faces a second, separate child sexual assault charge. That case is currently sitting in the same court awaiting trial.
