Police Detain Scores as Protesters Defy Ban at Jantar Mantar

Shillong: Delhi Police detained between 60 and 70 people on Saturday during an unauthorized protest at Jantar Mantar. The crowd demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. A scuffle broke out between agitators and officers, leaving some police personnel with minor injuries.

High-profile figures joined the demonstration. Senior advocate and MP Kapil Sibal, activist Yogendra Yadav, and advocate Prashant Bhushan were among the participants. The protest defied strict prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, which police maintained throughout the New Delhi district.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police warned against such activity on X. "Section 163 of BNSS, 2023 is in force in New Delhi District to ensure public safety, public order and smooth traffic movement," the post stated. Officials confirmed they received no prior intimation for the event and granted no permissions.

This marks a second day of unrest at the site. On Friday, police detained over 1,000 people including members of the Aam Aadmi Party and left-wing student groups like the Students Federation of India. Authorities have filed three FIRs at Parliament Street and Connaught Place police stations. These cases cite Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobeying an order from a public servant. While no specific individual is named, police are documenting all participating organizations and organizers in the case files.
