Shillong: BSNL staff across the country are ramping up pressure on the government. Workers held a relay hunger fast and a lunch-hour demonstration at the CTO in Shillong on Thursday. They want a wage hike dating back to January 1, 2017. The All Unions and Associations of BSNL organized the push for executives and non-executives alike.
Protesters argue the Department of Telecommunications is sitting on the file. BSNL management already cleared the proposal, but it remains stuck. Samir Khare, assistant secretary of the Sanchar Nigam Executives Association, noted the company last hiked pay in 2007. Many have waited years. "Those recruited after 2007 have not seen even a single pay revision," Khare said.
Roughly 25,000 employees are currently stuck at 2007 wage levels. Khare pointed out a glaring double standard. DoT staff working at BSNL still get raises, while regular company workers go without. The former BSNL CMD recommended executive pay changes during 2018-19. Paperwork for non-executives moved to the DoT in February 2026. The staff warned that the department has stalled the file for several months. They also blasted the affordability math used by officials, noting the firm handles social projects that offer little profit.
