Kohima: The BSNL office in Zunheboto is falling apart. Infrastructure is failing and the staff headcount is dangerously low. Sub-Divisional Engineer Kietou Nuh says the current state of affairs cripples telecom services throughout the district.
Only seven employees manage 41 telecom towers across Zunheboto. Five workers hold down the Old Town Colony office. One person works in Satakha. Another covers Aghunato. Nuh claims the office requires at least 10 people to function properly. The district currently has no technical staff to fix broken equipment.
Repair crews travel from Mokokchung instead. These technicians often take two days to arrive. This causes long network blackouts. Nuh noted, "The BSNL office building itself is in a deplorable condition and is on the verge of collapse."
The town hosts four towers in Amiphoto Colony, North Point Colony, Old Town Colony, and at the office itself. Plans exist to add nine more towers. Broadband remains limited. Only 11 fiber connections exist. These serve the Deputy Commissioner Office, the Assam Rifles Camp, and the State Bank of India in Aghunato. Outdated machinery and aging generators make routine upkeep a nightmare.
