Shillong: All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers and Labour Union leaders met with Public Health Engineering Chief Engineer R.S. Nongbri in Shillong on September 27. They thanked him for clearing four months of back wages owed to staff. Union president Mutdashisha Papang and assistant general secretary W. Rumut led the delegation to celebrate the resolution of these long-standing payment issues.
Workers finally received their pay for the period between April and July 2026. This payout also included the updated daily minimum wage and Variable Dearness Allowance effective from April. All dues are now settled through August 2026. Nongbri earned praise for finally pushing through the RCW scheme, a policy that sat idle for decades.
The fight is not over. The union now demands the state government fast-track the Employees' Provident Fund rollout. The Labour Commissioner already issued directives to provide this social security to eligible staff. "The union noted that implementing the scheme would provide long-term financial security to muster roll workers across government departments as well as those engaged through private contractors and firms." Officials maintain that these workers are legally entitled to the benefit. The union promises to keep pressing until the scheme reaches every worker in the state.
