Shillong: The Meghalaya State Food Commission wants immediate action against Fair Price Shops across the state. Officials cited consistent reports of short weighing, missing food supplies, and delayed distributions under the Public Distribution System. The Commission warned that these lapses hit vulnerable households hardest. It demanded prompt investigations into every formal complaint.
Transparency remains the primary goal. Shops must clearly display retail prices, stock levels, operating hours, and official beneficiary entitlements. While electronic Point of Sale devices improved tracking, technical glitches and poor network coverage often leave residents empty-handed. The commission insists that authorities must protect eligible people during the ongoing e-KYC process. Technical faults or Aadhaar discrepancies should not block access to food.
Meghalaya faces brutal geographical hurdles. Difficult terrain and bad weather often stall last-mile deliveries in remote areas. The Commission noted that the, "timely lifting and distribution of foodgrains by FPSs is essential," to keep the system running. It recommended that the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department maintain consistent supply chains despite these physical constraints.
Inspectors need to show up unannounced. Surprise visits will help catch overcharging and unauthorized ration denials. The Commission also pushed for mobile outreach camps to fix ration card errors and resolve grievances on the spot. Officials reminded the public that they can call 1967 for help if they suspect fraud or local shops are cutting corners.
