Meghalaya to Purge Silent Ration Cards Starting October 1

Shillong: The Meghalaya government will start deactivating silent ration cards on October 1, 2026. This move targets dead weight in the system. Officials aim to root out duplicate beneficiaries under the SMART-PDS to ensure food aid reaches the right people. The National Informatics Centre built the tracking system to handle the workload.

The portal checks for silent cards on the 21st of every month. It flags any card showing zero successful transactions for six straight months. The system also runs Aadhaar cross-checks against the Central Repository to find duplicates. Once the software identifies a card as silent, it pulls the plug automatically. The state sends an automated SMS alert to the Head of Family the moment a card gets cut.

Affected cardholders must act fast. "Beneficiaries receiving such alerts, or those who find that their ration cards have been deactivated, have been advised to visit their nearest Fair Price Shop (FPS) or the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply) during working hours." People have a 90-day grace period to finish e-KYC and Aadhaar verification. This window allows for re-enablement of their benefits. The Deputy Commissioner for West Jaintia Hills issued the notice to all National Food Security Act holders in the district.

The digital overhaul stems from a push to streamline the entire Public Distribution System. While the West Jaintia Hills office issued the notice, the mandate covers all National Food Security Act ration cardholders across the district.
