Meghalaya Congress Challenges Mandatory E20 Fuel Policy

Shillong: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress is pushing back against the mandatory rollout of E20 petrol. They want vehicle owners to pick their own fuel based on engine compatibility. MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla spoke out against the mandate this past Sunday. The policy threatens owners of older models with heavy repair bills.

Newer cars handle ethanol blends better. However, older engines face risks. Experts fear damage to fuel systems, lower mileage, and rising maintenance costs. The government already admitted that fuel efficiency will likely drop under this new standard. No formal data exists on how many vehicles on Indian roads can actually run on E20 safely.

Shylla warned against forcing owners to replace working vehicles because of government policy shifts. She pushed for an independent impact study. "Consumers should not be forced to bear the financial burden of a policy without adequate safeguards and clear information," she said. The Congress chapter demands total transparency and consumer choice before the mandate takes hold.
