Shillong: Former All India Trinamool Congress Meghalaya president Charles Pyngrope is pressuring the Congress high command to hold internal organizational elections. He says this move is the only way to recover before the 2028 state assembly polls. The party currently holds zero seats in the Legislative Assembly. This is a first in the history of Meghalaya.
Pyngrope claims relying on nominations instead of transparent votes kills public trust. He suggests that if the party needs an immediate change, they can appoint an interim Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president. However, he insists that these roles must only be temporary. "The party may appoint a new face on an interim basis if immediate change is required, but organisational elections should follow without delay," he said.
The former Nongthymmai MLA noted the party abandoned its tradition of using an electoral college to pick leaders. In the past, about 82 members voted for the state president and treasurer. He recalled that veteran leader DD Lapang held the presidency until December 30, 2017, before Celestine Lyngdoh took over. Pyngrope argues that elected leaders possess more legitimacy and accountability than those handed roles by the center.
He wants a shift toward grassroots decision-making. His plan includes separating legislative and organizational powers. He also wants more seats at the table for youth and women. Pyngrope refused to confirm if he plans to return to the Congress party. He remains tight-lipped on his future while waiting to consult his supporters.
