Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the state’s first block-level CM Connect Centre in Sohiong on July 18. The facility allows residents to file grievances locally, cutting the need for long-distance travel. Sangma signaled a shift in tone by asking former sepoy Pyntngenlang Nongrang of the 1st Assam Regiment to perform the inauguration. The Chief Minister said, “Government buildings should be inaugurated by members of the community. That honour makes the occasion far more meaningful than when it is done by dignitaries.”

The event at Mawtap Pyllun Ground featured the dedication of eight completed projects worth 5.48 crore rupees. These include a Block Integrated Development Office, a Block Resource Centre, and digital libraries across 13 villages. Sangma also broke ground on nine new initiatives totaling 140.74 crore rupees. Development targets include road improvements, sports infrastructure, and a major boost to regional tourism.

Large investments are heading for tourism sites, including Kynroh and Sohiong viewpoints, a tree house at Nongkasen, and a premium hotel at Lum Diengiei. Work will soon begin on the 34.53 crore rupee Greater Sohiong Water Supply Scheme. Additional funds are designated for the Dewlieh Mawrisnai irrigation project, a plastic waste management unit, and collective marketing centres.

During a public interaction, locals pressed officials on water scarcity, soil erosion, and road conditions. The government promised to address these gaps through the new center. Sangma also distributed over 4.5 crore rupees in financial aid to various self-help groups and village organizations to bolster rural economic development.
